Smiling Isn’t Just For Selfies!

I know I don’t usually write on a very serious note but I recently had an experience that made me appreciate the little things in life.

Walking by myself on the outskirts of town a few days ago I passed an elderly lady who was walking her dog, I smiled at her and said hello, thinking nothing of it. To my surprise she stopped me and her face was filled with joy. She thanked me for smiling at her because she said “I have passed so many people on my walk today and you are only the second person to smile at me”. She then went on to tell me how all the evil is lifted from the world when we smile and told me to keep smiling because she thinks its beautiful. As we parted I told her to have a nice day and she said “Thanks love, you too.”

This five minute chat with a complete stranger somehow had the power to put me in a fantastic mood all day. I think the fact that it was such a short conversation was the reason why I felt so moved by it. This conversation which some people may find silly made me realise how something as simple as a smile can be enough to lift someones day. I don’t know where that lady was from, I don’t know where she was going and I don’t know if she has any family, but I do know that by taking two seconds out of my day to make an effort conversing with her, it ended up having a longer lasting positive effect on me and I hope it did the same for her.

No matter what you’re going through or who you meet, always smile! Its the prettiest thing you can wear and will never go out of fashion!

Escaping The Friendzone And Getting Skittles Put Up My Nose

Boys are weird. I have had this belief since I was about eight and will continue to have this belief for the rest of my days. This was proven when I was little and the love of my life at the time told me I was having a bad hair day. Naturally I was upset but my mum told me when boys are mean it means they like you. Well, that told me everything that I need to know about men! He was the type of boy to bully you in the playground at lunch and tell you that you resemble a gremlin. I used to love that kind of thing.

10 years later when that eight year old crush had long gone, I decided to let a different boy I know make his way out of the Friendzone and become my boyfriend. Turns out my mum was right about them being mean to you, he does bully me and probably thinks I resemble a gremlin. That’s how I knew he was into me to begin with. We had known each other and been best friends for over two years and then overtime it developed into something more. Over the past six months I have become incredibly comfortable around this guy, perhaps a little bit too comfortable. Does he even find me attractive anymore? How has he lasted this long without breaking up with me?
Here are some of the ways that I know we have become very comfortable in our relationship…

1) We tell each other everything, whether its about the giant spot on my chin that I need to squeeze or detailed descriptions about my period pains.

2) “Are you falling asleep?” is a frequently asked question when we’re lying in bed watching football because I don’t mind using this time to have a quick nap (not actually quick though when match of the day seems to go on for four days).

3) He’s seen me at my worst and still loves me. This involves vomiting, double (or triple etc) chin snapchats and the ability to eat a kebab with my eyes half closed after a night of drinking. It’s not just me though, the way he kills romantic moments by farting isn’t exactly his most attractive feature either…

4) We pass time not being able to breathe because we’re laughing so much at stupid things, such as him putting skittles up my nose or my attempt at trying to squeeze into a suitcase.

5) Shaving my legs is a thing of the past…

6) He remembers how I like my tea. If that’s not love, what is?

7) We both have our own side of each others bed and our own sleeping routines. He stops cuddling me in the middle of the night and turns around because he gets uncomfortable, and I wrap my whole body around him when I realise what he’s doing so that he can’t escape again. I’m so evil…

8) He tickles me to the point of violence where the only choice I have is to kick and scream. Wrestling is a common occurrence, but he rarely wins…

Now do you see why boys are weird? Despite this, I’m not going anywhere. Andy K made his way out of the Friendzone, he must be Superman, right?

My Favourite Foundation For Night-time: Estee Lauder- Double Wear

When I am getting ready to go out at night one of the main things that I worry about is making sure my skin looks flawless and blemish free. For this full coverage I use Estee Lauder Double Wear. It literally covers every imperfection and stays on so well that if you forget to take your makeup off afterwards (or conk out in the middle of eating your kebab in bed like I do), when you wake up the next morning it looks like you’re ready to hit the town again! I would usually buy this in a darker shade than my own skin tone so that I can blend it in with my tan. The shade that I use is Desert Beige. Double Wear is between the 30 and 40 euro price range but the bottle will last you a very long time. The best foundation you can buy if you’re in the mood to be looking and feeling your best!

My Favourite Foundation For Everyday Use: Avon Ideal Flawless Invisible Coverage Foundation.

My favourite foundation for during the day is ‘Ideal Flawless, Invisible Coverage Foundation’ by Avon. Since I am so pale (look like a ghost 95% of the time), I used to find it difficult to find a foundation to match my skin tone. Luckily, I found this foundation which is perfect for my own skin tone because it is available in a light pink shade. This is so close to my own skin tone but gives me an even complexion and covers blemishes. Definitely my favourite foundation for everyday use because it looks so natural. Unfortunately, Avon are no longer in Ireland so you’ll need to purchase it online.  However, it is definitely worth it and is very affordable, unlike many other foundations on the market these days. I would recommend this if you like a natural, non caked daytime makeup look!

If There’s One Direction You’re Taking It Should Be Back Out The Door…

Now before I get any hate from One Direction obsessed teenage girls I would just like to point out that I do in fact love One Direction, I have seen them in concert and well lets face it, I wouldn’t say no to any of them!

On the other hand, am I the only person who has realised that they aren’t exactly an ideal group of guys judging by their lyrics? Now don’t worry, I know they told you you’re insecure and they don’t know what for and you light up their world like nobody else blah blah blah and I’m sure you do, but I just have to mention a few reasons why you will probably end up heartbroken and very bitter if you get involved with one of these beautiful creatures. Men would have your head wrecked…

1- C’mon Cmon-
“The one that I came with, she had to go, but you look amazing standing alone”

Look girls, lets not be foolish here we can all picture the scenario, you don’t get into the nightclub and end up going home, next thing you know all of his Snapchat stories are vidoes with random girls or loads of pictures of them kissing his cheek. Yes, we know, you want to kill them both, but don’t dwell on your unhappiness, that cheek was yours before it was hers. Get writing that hit list and get your friends that are still out to keep you updated by some subtle creeping..

2- Still The One-
“You say, you say to everybody that you hate me, couldn’t blame you cause I know I left you all alone”

So basically he’s woken up the next morning slightly more sober, realises who he was shifting while you were at home crying by yourself and saying to all your friends “Nah I hate him, like I actually hate him this time”. At this point we like to hope he’s absolutely kicking himself because lets face it, you looked hot in that dress. You even shaved your legs for him, how rude…

“Yeah now I’m back at your door, you’re looking at me unsure”

Too right I’m looking at you unsure, stink of yer wan off ya.

3- Nobody Compares-
“You’re so pretty when you cry”

Okay now they’re just lying to your face, who looks pretty when they cry? You have a face covered in snot and your eyes are all puffy with makeup smudged everywhere? No offence but you look like Ronald Mcdonald after he’s been caught in torrential rain. At this point you probably can’t speak properly either because you’re blubbering but are trying your best to get angry at him for being mean to you. Sexy xx

4- Gotta Be You-
“I’m the foolish one that you anointed with your heart, I tore it apart and girl what a mess I made upon your innocence and no woman in the world deserves this”

This is my favourite 1D song and I loooove it. At first I felt sorry for them but then I took a moment and realised that they are admitting it was their own fault and they broke her heart. No woman in the world deserves this but yet you decided it would be a good idea to put me through it and now you’ve decided to come crawling back to me? Men…

5- She’s Not Afraid
“Maybe all her friends have told her don’t get closer he’ll just break your heart”
And why would they be telling her this lads? Holding onto a bit of a player reputation? Not the most reliable? God I never would have guessed that from your other songs. Shes probably well aware of what you’re like and trying to dodge all the arrows that Cupid is firing at her. Damn you Cupid, you seriously need to improve your aim.

To conclude, I still love One Direction but I just think Ed Sheeran would be a more suitable match. He seems much more mature and willing to commit to you. Remember he did write Little Things, and who can resist a ginger that likes cats! Aww <3

The Best Moisturiser That You Will Ever Have. Ever.

One of the most annoying things for many girls is the issue of dry skin. It can make us really self conscious and we try to cover it up with makeup, but of course, that only worsens the problem by making it even more noticeable. I have been struggling with this for the majority of my teenage years and no moisturisers were helping, until now. Luckily, some weeks ago a miracle happened. As I was shopping I was drawn in by a pink tube on one of the shelves of Penneys makeup section. It was “Moisture Match- Dry To Very Dry Skin” by Garnier. Was I really going to leave it there? It’s pink and helps with dry skin, it’s like I had found my soulmate. Well, that was in fact the case because it is the best moisturiser that I have ever had. My skin is no longer dry and feels great. Goodbye worries and hello silky smooth!

If you don’t suffer with dry skin, not to worry because the Moisture Match range is tailor-made to suit all skin types. There are five of them available- One for normal skin, one for normal/dry, one for very dry (the one I bought), one for dull skin and one for combination/oily skin (which my sister has and loves!). Can we all take a moment to thank Garnier for giving us our confidence back please?

My Five Simple Steps To Big Hair

When it comes to my hair, volume is my favourite word! I cannot go on a night out when my hair looks flat, it just kills my mood and my outfit. Somebody once said to me that I looked like I had been dragged through a bush backwards. Mission accomplished!
So, if you’re like me and love hair that is full of volume here are the 5 simple steps that I take…
1) Blowdrying. After I have washed my hair I tend to blowdry it quite straight until the end when I flip my head over and dry it upside down for a while to add some bounce.
2) Backcombing. I have a backcombing brush which works wonders! Its a pink Opia one from Penneys, so very affordable. If you don’t have one of these then a normal comb will work too. Makesure you’re backcombing at the root to get the height in the correct place.
3) Batiste Dry Styling XXL Plumping Powder. If you are the type of person that fears backcombing (don’t worry, I used to be too!) then a different method is Plumping Powder. My mum is a hairdresser and uses it all the time. Its a powder that you lightly sprinkle onto your roots and use your fingers to style as you wish. It works so well that I’m actually convinced it’s fairy dust. Pop into Penneys to pick one up for only 4 euro and carry it around in your handbag for any flat hair emergencies!
4) Shockwaves Ultra Strong Rock And Hold Gel Styler by Wella. This is my favourite part of my hair styling routine and I bring it everywhere! A spray on gel that you can then style with your fingers. Non sticky and holds really well. I love it because it works so well, especially on my short layers! Can be bought in any of your usual shops for hair care and beauty and should last you ages unless you are like me and spray the entire bottle in one go…
5) Hairspray. An obvious one but of course a necessity for big, bouncy hair. I use Schwarzkopf Silhouette because A) Its really good. B) The bottle is pink!. And C) It lasts for ages! However, any hairspray will do to put that final finish and hold on the volume. If you don’t have any hairspray, get shopping! I use it on a daily basis and even use it to hold my eyebrows in place. Yes, you may laugh, my boyfriend finds it hilarious too but at least I have eyebrows that are kept under control! Yay for hairspray!
